Apart from some habitual and compulsory everyday activities, such as having a shower, eating, paying bills, working and sleeping, we add to our lives a bunch of other parallel activities whose necessary fuel is the right amount of INTRINSIC MOTIVATION. Just to cite some: working out, being on a diet, sleeping better, eating healthly and, of course, studying a new language. None of these actions come to a successful end if you lack motivation and (what I personally think) a great amount of pleasure as well.
The wire that conducts your motivation to study English can come from anywhere: the chance to apply for a new job, to earn a better salary, to travel abroad, to have new experiences in life, to have a better understanding of the world and a sense of belonging, to make new friends, to enroll for specialized courses and others. Most of the students who begin studying English have their own motivation wire, but the question is: is it enough to make you endure such a hard job that studying a language requires?
What I see with some students is that few of them keep the necessary fuel that leads them to their pot of gold. For this reason, I love teaching low chapters because I can see clearly some sparks in the students’ eyes and I know they just want the best of me (being able to give the best of me MOTIVATES me). However, my so talented colleagues and I can’t help wondering whether these ‘so-ideal’ students are gonna change their attitude or not throughout the course. Bad news: most of them do, which makes me think that studying a new language requires a lot of effort and dedication, but, unfortunately, few students are willing to cross this barrier. So, what should we do when finding this barrier? Where can we find the necessary fuel to get us back on the right track? How can we keep ourselves motivated for it? It may sound cliché or helpless, but the main person responsible for figuring it out is YOU. Trying to recall your initial goals would be a good beginning!
I personally think that there is no stronger motivation than truly liking the language and having pleasure studying it, at least that’s what motivated me to be a teacher and an endless student of the English language.
And you? What motivates you most? What holds you back sometimes?
